I really want to believe this: The Telepathy Tapes

The Telepathy tapes

I heard the premise of this podcast and immediately went into skeptic mode. But I was driving on the windy, steep road out of Anza-Borrego Desert and my tech-challenged, height-fearing old self could not easily change the podcast. As I listened I became intrigued.

The Telepathy Tapes is a podcast by Ky Dickens about a literally mind-blowing topic: telepathy in kids diagnosed with non-verbal autism. Dr. Diane Hennacy Powell, a Johns Hopkins neuroscientist who was once on the faculty at Harvard, began investigating the phenomenon when the parents of these children started reaching out to her. After being told by doctors that their children could not communicate or learn, these parents had experiences that made them believe their children were actually reading their minds.

These were people from all over the world, who didn’t know each other, who were having a hard time believing what they were experiencing. They had found Dr. Powell because of her studies with savants. They were desperate for answers. And so Dr. Powell started testing.

The parents reported that their children, using iPads or letter boards, were able to write what the parent was thinking. Dr. Powell implemented tests using cameras and blindfolds and spontaneously thought up words and numbers.

The thought of this reminds me of that scientist, Dr. Michael Masters, who theorizes that what we think of as aliens are actually evolved human beings. (We did a Daily Pondering on him…look up Are Aliens Evolved Human Beings? on December 6, 2024.) I’ve seen some interviews with people who believe they’ve had experiences with aliens, and they often say the aliens communicated telepathically.

I really want to believe these kids are telepathic, but when I watch the videos I found on YouTube, I’m not totally convinced. And after looking up Dr. Powell, I saw that her medical license has lapsed and at one point it was taken away.

I included a video below. There are a lot on YouTube, and you can listen to the podcast. What do you think?
